Frequently Asked Questions
What are the requirements to become a Private Pilot?
The requirements are set forth by the FAA as follows: Be at least 17 years of age (you can solo at 16), you can read, write and understand English, must hold a U.S. Student Pilot Certificate, meet the aeronautical experience for the rating sought, receive flight training and endorsements from a qualified instructor, and pass a practical test for the rating sought.
What is the aeronautical experience needed to become a Private Pilot?
Again, as set forth by the FAA, you must have 40 hours minimum of total flight time, 20 of which is with an authorized instructor, 10 of which is solo time. Then the requirements are as follows: 3 hours of cross country flight training, 3 hours of night flight training, including one cross country flight of, at minimum, 100 nautical miles total distance, 10 takeoffs and landings to a full stop. 3 hours of training with sole reference to the instruments, 3 hours of flight training with an authorized instructor in the 2 months leading up to the practical test. The 10 hours of solo has the following requirements: 5 hours of solo cross country time, 1 solo cross country flight of a minimum 150 nautical miles total distance, with full stop landings at three points, and one of the legs of that flight has to be greater than 50 nautical miles. 3 takeoffs and landings to a full stop at a field with an operating control tower.
How do I get started?
Send us your information via the “contact” tab on this site! Or send an email to freshcoastflight@gmail.com. We will reach out with more information, including how to apply for a student pilot certificate, and more.
How much does it cost to get my PPL?
It depends on your work ethic. At minimum 40 hours you could get it done at approximately $8,000 including materials. This in comparison to other places in the country is significantly cheap. The average time to get a PPL is 60 hours, but it all depends on the person. Thanks to local organizations we are lucky to have reasonable rental rates on aircraft.
What aircraft do I get to train in?
At Fresh Coast Flight, we are lucky to work with some local non-profits, such as the Marquette County Flying Club, where we have access to 5 beautiful aircraft; a PA-28-140, a C172, 2 C150’s and a PA-28-180 which is primarily used for Instrument training. We also are able to offer instruction in an aircraft you may own. Coming soon with more options.
What is the most challenging part of flight training?
The most challenging part for most people is staying motivated. Especially training part 61, a lot of the studying has to be done on your own time. Flying is truly only about 20% of this process, where the rest of the time is spent on the ground learning all there is to know. We want our students to come prepared to each flight, so that we can make the best use of your time and money! It is recommended to get your written exam done before starting training so that you can have a good base of understanding as to what is going on in the airplane.
